Povl Kjear studied design at the School of Arts and Crafts in Kolding then sculpture at the Art Academy of Aarhus, Denmark, and Norway in Rauland Academy, where he studied folk arts.
From 1979 to 1981 he completed his apprenticeship with the sculptor KH Nielsen then created his own workshop.
He has since exhibited all over the world.
He signed many monumental sculptures of wood, including that of Andersen (writer) for the Hans Christian Andersen Museum in Odense.
His most popular piece in Denmark is his rocking sheep, created in 1981 for his first daughter Julie. Sheep, carved one by one by hand, are still made in small quantities in the workshops of Ry in Denmark. A hundred copies are produced each year.
